Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most personal and important decisions you’ll make during your planning journey. After the big day is over, it’s the photos that will stay with you for a lifetime — capturing your love, emotions, and the people you celebrated with.
To avoid disappointment, don’t just fall for a beautiful Instagram feed — take the time to connect, ask questions, and make sure it truly feels like the right fit.
Here are 7 essential questions I always recommend you ask when looking for your photographer:
1. Are you available on our date?
Let’s start with the obvious but critical one. Even if you’ve completely fallen for someone’s style, availability comes first. If the photographer you love is already booked, ask if they can recommend someone they personally trust.
2. What’s your photography style — and does it match what we envision?
Do you want something natural and candid? Editorial and dramatic? Light and airy? Moody and artistic? Ask your photographer how they define their style and whether it aligns with the look you’re dreaming of. And make sure to see full wedding galleries, not just the social media highlights.
3. What exactly is included in your package?
Clarity is key. How many hours of coverage are you getting? How many edited images? Is there a second shooter? Do you get an engagement session, album, online gallery? The more transparent the offer, the more peace of mind you’ll have leading up to your wedding.
4. What’s it like working with you on the wedding day?
Your photographer will be with you through some of the most emotional, intimate, and hectic moments of your day. Ask how they typically work with couples and guests. Are they calm under pressure? Do they help manage timelines or work discreetly in the background?
5. When and how will we receive our photos?
Find out what you can expect in terms of delivery: How soon will you get your photos? In what format — online gallery, USB, printed album? How many images? Will everything be fully edited? It’s your memories — you deserve to know when and how they’ll arrive.
6. Do you use a contract and ask for a deposit?
The answer should be yes. A professional contract protects both sides and outlines all the details clearly: the date, hours of coverage, pricing, deliverables, and terms. Don’t hesitate to ask — it’s absolutely normal and expected.
7. Can we read reviews or see full galleries from similar weddings?
Check platforms like Google, WeddingWire, or The Knot for honest reviews. Also ask to see full galleries — especially from weddings similar to yours (same season, similar venue or lighting). This will give you a more realistic idea of the consistency and quality of their work.
Bonus Tip: Trust your gut
Even the most skilled photographer might not be the right person for you if there’s no personal connection. You’ll be spending so much time together — from getting ready to the last dance. If you feel relaxed and comfortable, your photos will show it. Trust that feeling.
Finding your wedding photographer is about more than just liking pretty pictures. It’s about trust, chemistry, and feeling seen. These 7 questions will guide you to a thoughtful, informed decision — one you’ll be grateful for every time you open your wedding album and relive those moments all over again.
